Abstract
From infancy, humans exhibit a profound psychological need for strong, protective figures, shaping both individual behavior and societal structures. I explore how early caregiver relationships, as conceptualized by Freud, Klein, Bowlby, Winnicott, and Kohut, serve as templates for later attachments to authority figures, ideologies, and traditions. Examining historical and contemporary examples-including political movements and adherence to psychological frameworks-I argue that the quest for security underlies both stability and rigidity in personal and cultural contexts. By considering the implications for both patients and clinicians, I highlight the tension between dependency and autonomy, offering a psychoanalytic perspective on authority and its role in therapeutic and societal dynamics.
