Abstract
In this study, the limitations of the magnetic flux leakage (MFL) method for detecting single cracks in pipelines in accordance with GOST R 55999-2014 have been defined and refined. Parametric finite-element 2D and 3D-models validated on actual defects have been used to calculate the magnetic leakage field strength depending on defect’s geometric parameters. It has been established that the minimal defect length for transitioning to a 2D model is 200 mm. Reliable detection (probability >90%) has been shown to be achieved at a threshold value of dHx = 15 A/cm. The minimal detectable crack depths have been determined as a function of crack opening: 0.56 of the wall thickness for an opening of 20 μm, 0.20 for 50 μm, and 0.12 for 100 μm. Cracks with an opening of 10 μm are not detected even at a depth of 0.85 of the wall thickness.

Russian Journal of Nondestructive Testing, a translation of Defectoskopiya, is a publication of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This publication offers current Russian research on the theory and technology of nondestructive testing of materials and components. It describes laboratory and industrial investigations of devices and instrumentation and provides reviews of new equipment developed for series manufacture. Articles cover all physical methods of nondestructive testing, including magnetic and electrical; ultrasonic; X-ray and Y-ray; capillary; liquid (color luminescence), and radio (for materials of low conductivity).
