Abstract
The article presents the results of a study on wear in the rotary valves of Gifford–McMahon cryocoolers. The study was conducted using a rotor and stator friction pair as a case study after 18 000–20 000 h of operation. Methods of visual-optical control using a metallurgical microscope, profilometry, and elemental surface analysis were employed. The characteristics of wear in the composite and metal components of the rotor and stator are described; data regarding surface roughness, scratch depth, and shape deformation are presented. Elemental analysis was performed on both the contact and reverse sides of the rotor and stator. Possible causes of radial scratches and their impact on cryocooler performance were identified. The results of this study may be useful to improve the reliability and durability of cryocoolers.

Russian Journal of Nondestructive Testing, a translation of Defectoskopiya, is a publication of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This publication offers current Russian research on the theory and technology of nondestructive testing of materials and components. It describes laboratory and industrial investigations of devices and instrumentation and provides reviews of new equipment developed for series manufacture. Articles cover all physical methods of nondestructive testing, including magnetic and electrical; ultrasonic; X-ray and Y-ray; capillary; liquid (color luminescence), and radio (for materials of low conductivity).
