Abstract

We presented the results of a study of the substrate temperature effect on the adhesion properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings deposited using a forevacuum plasma-cathode electron source. The adhesion strength parameters were tested with a Revetest RST Macro Scratch tester using the scratch technique. Tests were conducted gradually increasing the load from 0.5 to 100 N at a rate of 2 mm/min and a length of 3–5 mm. The value of the critical load was used to determine the adhesion strength in the coating-substrate system by measuring the applied normal load, the indenter penetration depth, acoustic emission, and the coefficient of friction. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to visualize the indenter track and coating failure. The composition of coatings and chipped area were analysed using the energy-dispersive method. It has been established that the upper value of the critical load significantly increases from 5 to 81 N as the substrate temperature increases from 197to 1050°C.
