Abstract

Paramagnetic centers formed by isotopically pure 53Cr impurity ions in synthetic forsterite (Mg2SiO4) were studied by continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The chromium ions were shown to replace magnesium ions in the M1 and M2 crystallographic sites of the forsterite crystal lattice in the form of single Cr3+ and Cr2+ ions and as a dimer associate formed by two closely spaced Cr3+ ions connected by an exchange interaction. The parameters of the hyperfine interaction between the electron and nuclear spins were determined for single ions.
