Abstract
Combined experimental and numerical studies of the cathode fall layer parameters of the self-sustained normal direct current glow discharge in helium at atmospheric pressure with different cathode shapes (planar and rod cathode and planar one with a hole) are presented. It is shown that the cathode shape significantly influences the voltage-current characteristics, spatial distribution of temperature and electric field. Simulation results according to numerical two-dimensional model based on drift-diffusion theory exhibit reasonably good agreement with experiment for discharge with planar and rod cathodes.
