Abstract
The oxidation of Co films on MgO was investigated. A short annealing formed a 1-nm oxide layer; a long one (90 min) led to complete oxidation. In the CoOx/Py structures, an exchange bias of 2.5 kOe was detected. It was shown that the initial thickness of the Co layer is the main parameter determining the uniformity of the magnetic state. The results are important for obtaining antiferromagnetic cobalt oxide with the desired properties.
