Abstract
Boundary layer control is considered using the active mechanism of modified discrete co-flow jet configuration (M-DCFJ). The objective of the study is to improve the aerodynamic performance and the power coefficient of horizontal axis wind turbine using the active flow control methods. In the simulation study, the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation with the k–ω SST turbulence model are used to identify the parameters of the lift, drag and pressure coefficients. The results show that the proposed M-DCFJ method increases the stall by 33% and the lift coefficient up to 24% with a 23% drag reduction in comparison to the existing co-flow jet model. Also, the suggested method proved that the proposed M-DCFJ method performance with 10 slots open provides the optimum performance compared to other M-DCFJ aerofoil configurations. The core innovation in the suggested method is utilizing the M-DCFJ method by positioning the injection of secondary flow at various locations and then measuring the performance. The proposed method can be used for wind turbine blades, aircraft wings and helicopter blades to delay the boundary layer separation.
