Abstract

Background. The gluteus medius is a broad, thick, fan-shaped muscle located between the gluteus maximus and the gluteus minimus. It originates on the gluteal surface on the iliac ala, between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines, and inserts on the greater trochanter of the femur. It is the strongest hip abductor, playing a crucial role in ensuring appropriate stability of the pelvis and lower limb joints during activities such as walking and running. The main aim of this study was to examine the morphology and morphometry of the gluteus medius muscle and its connection to the iliotibial band. Material and methods: The study was conducted on 10 human lower limbs fixed in a formaldehyde solution. Results. The research conducted confirms the existence of adhesion between the gluteus medius and the iliotibial band. This adhesion was located on the outer surface of the gluteus medius muscle, within its free part that was not covered by the gluteus maximus and the tensor fasciae latae. Conclusion. The existence of adhesion existence of adhesion between the gluteus medius and the iliotibial band may suggest a crucial role in the control of iliotibial band tension, which is additionally influenced by the action of the gluteus maximus and the tensor fasciae latae.
