Abstract

Previously unknown azidomethyl derivatives of benzazole-2-thiones (1,3-benzoxazole-2-thione, 1,3-benzothiazole-2-thione, and benzimidazole-2-thione) and 1,3-thiazol-2-amine have been synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding alkoxymethyl derivatives with trimethylsilyl azide. The structure of the synthesized compounds has been determined by 1H and 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Their anticorrosion properties toward St-3 steel in acidic medium have been studied by the gravimetric method. All compounds have been found to effectively inhibit steel corrosion, which may be due to the presence of several electron-donor centers (S, N, O, N3, and π-conjugated system), providing effective adsorption on the metal surface. Introduction of an azide moiety increases the electron density of the molecule and enhances adsorption of the inhibitor and its protective effect.
