Abstract
Objective
Despite the multiple links between pain, personality traits, and negative emotions, little is known about how body image, personality traits, and emotion regulation are linked in people with chronic disease. Some studies emphasized that chronic pain is mainly linked to emotional dysregulation rather than personality traits. However, recent studies found that individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) who exhibit high neuroticism struggle to adapt to the disease and related stresses, leading to dissatisfaction with themselves. This study aimed to provide a model to investigate the relationship between personality traits and body image with the mediation role of emotion regulation in people with RA.
Methods
Using the purposive sampling method, 350 people (243 women and 107 men) with RA referred to the rheumatology centers of Tehran hospitals in 2022 were selected, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data was collected using the Multidimensional Body–Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ), NEO Personality Questionnaire, and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). In this study, SPSS software was used to calculate descriptive data statistics, and AMOS software was used to check hypotheses with regression methods and structural equations.
Results
According to the findings of the research, it was determined that the structural model of the body image relationship based on personality traits with the mediation of emotion regulation in people with RA has a good fit. Therefore, emotion regulation plays a mediating role in the relationship between personality traits and body image.
Conclusion
Considering the role of psychological factors in the body image of people with RA, in order to improve the body image in these people, complementary treatments focusing on cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors are suggested.
