Abstract

Patient summary

Surgery for benign prostatic obstruction is increasingly performed in older men with multiple medical problems. These medical problems may both worsen urinary symptoms and the risk of complications from surgery. As a result, the best surgical option is not the same for every patient. Urologic surgeons need to be aware of their patients’ comorbidities, and sometimes interdisciplinary consultation with other medical specialties is needed for the planning of a safe operation.
