Abstract
In the adaptation of local nitrifying bacteria for the treatment of coke plant wastewater, research shows that the development of nitrification has a positive influence on characteristics of the treated water such as the color, transparency, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The rates of biooxidation of the basic pollutants in coke plant wastewater, including diatomic phenols, are compared when using cumulative cultures obtained by repeated cultivation. The mean oxidation rates of the pollutants are of the same order of magnitude: 2.29–4.82 mg/L for the same initial concentration. Of the diatomic phenols, those with the greatest effect on the color of the treated wastewater are metabolites formed in the oxidation of pyrocatechol.
