Abstract
Use of an optimized cushion foundation using the example of the A1 in Leverkusen
During the construction of the new Leverkusen Rhine bridge, a section of the A1 federal highway had to be rerouted. The new roadway crosses a historically filled and secured old landfill site containing heterogeneous, uncompacted, and in some cases environmentally relevant waste. The aim was to minimize interference with the landfill while ensuring the serviceability of the motorway superstructure. The use of high tensile stiffness geosynthetic reinforcements made it possible to reduce the thickness of the road structure and significantly minimize contact with contaminated landfill material. This was based on multivariate analytical calculations using several methods approved in Europe. The optimized design in a reduced construction consists of knitted aramid geogrids and laid geogrids made of high-strength polyester. In addition, an adsorbing activated carbon mat was used in ecologically critical zones. The article presents the boundary conditions, the design philosophy, the selected system solution, and aspects of the execution.
