Abstract
Introduction: The language barrier constitutes a major obstacle to healthcare access. In response, on-site and telephone professional interpreting services were implemented in 2017 in the Pays de la Loire region. This study aims to assess healthcare professionals’ perceptions of these services in ambulatory care settings.
Methods: A qualitative study based on grounded theory principles was conducted through focus groups and semi-structured interviews with community-based healthcare professionals who had previously used interpreting services. Participants were recruited via email using program activity records. Data were analyzed and categorized according to emerging themes. An explanatory model, resulting from integrative analysis, was developed and illustrated in a diagram.
Results: A total of 17 healthcare professionals were interviewed (13 general practitioners, 2 midwives, and 2 speech and language therapists) through two focus groups and five individual interviews. Participants highlighted improvements in communication and the therapeutic relationship, as well as the intercultural contribution, which made interpreting a versatile tool well suited to the consultations. They gradually appropriated this practice, reporting both professional and personal satisfaction. However, structural constraints limited broader implementation. Additional barriers included longer consultation times and concerns that using interpreters might complicate complex situations or disrupt the therapeutic relationship.
Conclusion: Professional interpreting enhances the safety of the therapeutic relationship and helps reduce inequalities in healthcare access. Broader adoption, financial recognition, and wider dissemination among healthcare providers are essential to ensure sustainability.
