Abstract

Key Words: pollution, micronuclei, particulate matter

SUMMARY

Objectives: the main goal of the proposed molecular epidemiology approach is to assess the association between airborne pollutants (e.g., particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.) and early biological (genotoxic) effects in children.
Methods: early biological effect biomarkers (i.e., micronuclei and nuclear buds) will be assessed in exfo- liated buccal mucosa cells of 6–8-year scholars living in Gubbio (exposed) and in Città di Castello (controls). Free available data on airborne pollution will be gathered from the ARPA Umbria website, and indoor exposure to genotoxic xenobiotics will be assessed by administering an ad-hoc questionnaire. Both buccal mucosa cell sampling and airborne data collection will be repeated in 2 different seasons (Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter), characterized by different concentrations of pollutants.
Conclusions: the whole dataset will be analyzed to detect the association between exposure to air pollutants and the frequency of early biological effect biomarkers.

Autore per corrispondenza: edoardo.franceschini@unipg.it
