Abstract
Background: The concept of normalization of deviance is an emerging concern in health care. Nurses may rationalize deviations for efficiency, often driven by production pressure. This silent drift away from standards increases the risk of serious adverse events and weakens safety culture.
Purpose: The purpose of this analysis was to clarify the concept of normalization of deviance.
Methods: Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis guided a literature review on normalization of deviance to identify attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents.
Results: Three key attributes of normalization of deviance were identified: production pressure, desensitization and drift, and the culture of safety.
Conclusions: This concept analysis provides an understanding of normalization of deviance in nursing, which may inform the development of nursing theory, improve nursing care quality, and provide clarity and consistency for a phenomenon central to the nursing profession.
