Systemic manifestations of sexually transmitted infections

Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are largely recognized for causing urogenital symptoms; however, many have significant systemic manifestations that can be the first or indeed only signs of infection. Delayed diagnosis can lead to significant morbidity, highlighting the importance of considering STIs in the differential diagnosis of systemic illness. This article describes the systemic manifestations of some common bacterial STIs in the UK.
