Abstract
Objective: In this study, we aimed to survey the current activities of sports dental hygienists (SDHs) in Japan certified by the Japanese Academy of Sports Dentistry (JASD) and to formulate policies for future development.
Method: Using a published list of JASD-certified SDHs (hereafter, SDHs) on the JASD website, we surveyed the activity status of these individuals through a voluntary, anonymous questionnaire (partially self-administered and multiple-choice) distributed by postal delivery between February and March 2023. The questionnaire included single-answer, multiple-answer and free-response formats. Sixty-seven questionnaires were mailed out and 38 individuals responded.
Results: The response rate was 56.7% (38 participants). Most SDHs worked in dental clinics, and the top reason for obtaining certification was 'interest.' Regarding services provided to athletes, SDHs mainly offered oral hygiene instruction and polishing (in the field of oral prophylaxis). Furthermore, as dental auxiliaries, SDHs mainly assisted with taking impressions for mouthguards. Some SDHs participated in promoting trauma prevention devices, assisting with sports-related traumas in the jaw and oral cavity, and working in exercise areas. Seven SDHs participated in dental hygienist training (practical instruction), aiming to 'spread and develop sports dentistry education'. Regarding the future potential of SDHs, many respondents expressed a desire to construct more venues for their activities.
Conclusions: At the time of the survey, SDHs in Japan were engaged in various activities, including oral prophylaxis, oral health instruction services for athletes, work related to mouthguards, educational activities for trauma prevention devices, assistance with sports-related traumas in the jaw and oral cavity areas, and work in exercise areas. Dental clinic workers were particularly active in these roles, and many SDHs are seeking further opportunities for activity. Increasing professional opportunities for SDHs is expected to enhance their qualifications and improve the oral health of athletes and sports enthusiasts in the future.
