Abstract

Purpose: The reported incidence of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) in Western countries ranges from 29 to 63 cases per 100,000 people. TIA is often considered transient, and patients are typically discharged with limited follow-up. However, one-third of patients experience long-term physical, psychological, cognitive, and social challenges affecting everyday life. This study explores the aftermath experiences of patients facing long-term challenges after TIA, focusing on significant factors for returning to everyday life.

Materials and methods: Twelve individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients 5-10 months post-TIA. A critical hermeneutic approach guided the study, with analysis and interpretation inspired by critical theory.

Results: Three themes emerged: 1) My everyday life has changed, and I still feel different; 2) I am struggling to return to my everyday life; and 3) I feel let down by the healthcare system. The findings show that people with TIA face long-term challenges that are often overlooked, making it difficult to resume everyday life. Many feel unsupported by healthcare services.

Conclusion: Patients report significant and lasting impacts on their lives following TIA, often without sufficient healthcare support. These findings highlight a need for improved, tailored healthcare strategies to meet the complex needs of this patient group.
