Abstract
Alkaline Aluminum-air (Al-air) batteries are gaining increasing interest due to their high theoretical energy density and intrinsic safety, which are promising for energy storage applications. Hydrogen evolution and discharge behavior of Al electrodes are examined in concentrated NaOH solutions (> 4 mol L-1) through a series of full-cell discharge and electrochemical tests. The relationship between hydrogen evolution and discharge behavior of Al electrodes is clarified. Results indicate that in alkaline Al-air batteries, Al electrode generates a small quantity of hydrogen with a discharge current increasing (up to 40 mA cm-2). Highly concentrated NaOH solution is optimal for high-current discharge scenarios. As the concentration of NaOH increases, the accumulation of reaction products on the surface of Al electrode occurs, resulting in alteration of discharge behavior and hydrogen evolution.
