Abstract
The rampant misuse of pharmaceuticals, including ciprofloxacin, has severely harmed ecosystems. Although oxidative degradation of ciprofloxacin shows promise, it often requires substantial energy consumption. Therefore, developing an eco-friendly and efficient degradation method is crucial. This study investigates the degradation of ciprofloxacin using MXene (Ti3C2) synthesized via conventional and microwave-assisted (MW) methods. To enhance photocatalytic activity, La/MXene nanocomposites were synthesized using the MW method with three different ratios (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1). Characterization techniques, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX analysis, confirmed the development of MXene and La/MXene nanocomposites. SEM images revealed lanthanum nanoparticles attached to the surface of MXene layers. The effects of pH, time, and hydrogen peroxide concentration on ciprofloxacin removal were examined. Photocatalytic investigations showed that La/MXene nanocomposites significantly outperformed pure MXene in ciprofloxacin removal. Notably, the La/MXene nanocomposite (1:2) achieved a remarkable removal efficiency of 97.83% within 120 min. Adding 0.05% H2O2 further enhanced degradation to 99.05%. The La/MXene nanocomposite demonstrated good recyclability and stability.

Topics in Catalysis publishes topical collections in all fields of catalysis which are composed only of invited articles from leading authors. The journal documents today’s emerging and critical trends in all branches of catalysis. Each themed issue is organized by renowned Guest Editors in collaboration with the Editors-in-Chief. Proposals for new topics are welcome and should be submitted directly to the Editors-in-Chief.
The publication of individual uninvited original research articles can be sent to our sister journal Catalysis Letters. This journal aims for rapid publication of high-impact original research articles in all fields of both applied and theoretical catalysis, including heterogeneous, homogeneous and biocatalysis.
