#DepoProvera, an analysis of the most popular TikTok videos about medroxyprogesterone acetate

Abstract

Objectives

This study aims to describe content and assess information quality in top TikTok videos tagged #depo and/or #DepoProvera.

Study design

We evaluated the top 100 most viewed videos tagged #depo or #DepoProvera.

Results

Many creators were young with 44% being between 20 and 29 years old. Most videos are about a creator’s personal experience (52%) or are educational (35%). About one-third (36%) of creators are medical professionals and their videos have higher mean accuracy scores on the DISCERN scale as compared to videos created by laypeople (p = 0.005).

Conclusions

#DepoProvera TikTok videos often depict negative personal experiences shared by laypeople, influencing patient perceptions of this contraceptive method.
