Abstract

Historically, the importance of the human microbiota has been recognised, along with its role in homeostasis and pathogenesis. The purpose of this review is to analyse the role of probiotics in the treatment of various dermatological pathologies, such as acne, atopic dermatitis, wound healing, and aging. We want to evaluate the evidence on how they can reduce inflammation, proliferation of different microorganisms causing the mentioned pathologies, and the colonization of some pathogens, obtaining immunomodulatory effects, improving skin appearance, and helping to prevent infections. However, it is important to consider the need for the selection of specific probiotic strains for each dermatological pathology, highlighting the interconnection between the skin and other systems, such as the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems, which opens up new pathways for personalized, targeted, and effective treatments in dermatology.
