Abstract

This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of 11 licensed professional counselors (LPCs, LPCCs, LPCC-Ss), exploring their educational and professional trajectories and perceived preparedness for working with clients suffering from substance use disorders. The findings of semi-structured interviews identified five main themes and two subthemes regarding experiences perceived as helpful throughout their educational and professional trajectories. The findings are relevant for CACREP-accredited counselor education programs and the profession. Recommendations are reviewed, along with suggestions to enhance counselors' readiness to meet the growing demand.
