Abstract
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive, often underdiagnosed interstitial lung disease with a poor prognosis. Nurse practitioners are positioned to improve outcomes through understanding the environmental exposures in their communities, screening and early detection, and comprehensive care that includes mitigating exposure risks. This report outlines environmental and occupational risk factors, screening strategies, and the importance of patient partnership and multidisciplinary management. By understanding how IPF presents, and identifying exposures and exposure risks, nurse practitioners can make a big difference in both disease incidence and the clinical outcomes for patients with IPF.
