Abstract

Recent data from the Association on Higher Education and Disability shows that more than 40% of disability services staffers have been in their position for five years or fewer (see 2024 Biennial AHEAD Survey: Disability Resource Professionals in Higher Education). Turnover can be especially concerning for DS offices. You not only have to train staff but also have to address how the turnover affects students, who may be accustomed to certain procedures and accommodations. Consider creating a master manual for your office to provide all staffers with a helpful overview of how it functions and to create institutional knowledge for those who will succeed you.
