Abstract

Abstract: Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability in both the United States and worldwide. In comparison to nonexposed controls, athletes, including tactical athletes such as military members and first responders, have higher rates of osteoarthritis. Management of osteoarthritis in the athletic population is largely similar to management of osteoarthritis in the general population, with a strong emphasis on conservative management. The focus of this article is to provide an evidence-based overview of the conservative management of osteoarthritis in athletic individuals to include exercise, biomechanical interventions, pharmaceutical modalities, as well as emerging nonpharmaceutical modalities such as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, radiofrequency ablation, Tai Chi, and acupuncture.

This peer-reviewed journal harnesses the tremendous scientific and clinical resources of ACSM to develop articles reviewing recent and important advances in the field that have clinical relevance. The journal’s goal is to translate the latest research and advances in the field into information physicians can use in caring for their patients. To accomplish this goal, the journal divides the broad field of sports medicine into 12 sections, each headed by a physician editor with extensive practical experience in that area. The current sections include: Head, Neck, and Spine - General Medical Conditions - Chest and Abdominal Conditions - Environmental Conditions - Sideline and Event Management - Training, Prevention, and Rehabilitation - Exercise is Medicine- Nutrition & Ergogenic Aids - Extremity and Joint Conditions - Sport-specific Illness and Injury - Competitive Sports - Special Populations
