Abstract

Composting is a sustainable method for treating food waste (FW) in Bahrain, where FW management typically involves incineration or landfilling. This study explores converting FW into organic compost for national afforestation, offering an alternative to animal-based compost. A 20 kg FW sample was composted over six weeks, producing 12 kg of compost that met all nine local organic compost standards. Adopting FW compost could save 21,024 Bahraini Dinars annually, reduce landfill volume by 60%, and cut costs by 31%. This approach could significantly mitigate the environmental impact of FW, promoting a more sustainable future.
