Abstract
Preceptor incivility remains an underexplored issue in nurse practitioner (NP) education. This cross-sectional study surveyed 119 NP students across 6 midwestern universities who had completed at least 1 clinical rotation. A total of 50.4% experienced incivility, often in subtle forms, such as exclusion or dismissiveness. These behaviors were perceived as harmful to students’ psychological safety, professional identity, and clinical confidence. Survey findings highlight the need for supportive learning environments; clear preceptor expectations; and safe, nonpunitive reporting mechanisms. Addressing preceptor incivility may strengthen student well-being, promote equity in clinical education, and support the sustainability of the future NP workforce.
