Abstract
The motivation of the article is that evidence of industrial symbiosis in the coffee sector is scarce in the literature. The research question is: How can industrial symbiosis be implemented in the coffee sector? This study proposes a roadmap for implementing industrial symbiosis in a coffee production regional cluster in central Colombia. The research explores the steps for fostering symbiotic relationships within the coffee industry, focusing on the potential of coffee by-products and effective land use management. The methodology combines semi-structured interviews with cluster members and a comprehensive literature review on cluster and industrial symbiosis. The article outlines 11 actionable steps for enhancing symbiotic relationships and land use management within the cluster. These steps emphasize the importance of integrated land management practices in optimizing resource use, reducing environmental impact, and promoting sustainable development in the coffee industry. The study highlights the significance of industrial symbiosis in creating environmental, economic, and social benefits through by-product sharing, particularly within industrial clusters where diverse industries collaborate. By addressing challenges and opportunities in the coffee sector, this research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable practices in agribusiness. It offers practical guidance for implementing circular economy principles in coffee production clusters. The findings have implications for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers interested in sustainable agricultural practices and industrial ecology.
