Abstract
Purpose: To determine the relationship between engulfment and hope in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Method: A descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study was conducted in Türkiye with individuals who met inclusion criteria and provided consent to participate. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Engulfment Scale, and Herth Hope Scale.
Results: Mean score on the Engulfment Scale was 77.9 (SD = 12.7), whereas mean score on the Herth Hope Scale was 37.7 (SD = 11.7). A significant moderate negative correlation was found between Engulfment Scale and Herth Hope Scale scores (r = -0.741, p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that hope levels accounted for 69.8% of the variance in engulfment.
Conclusion: Participants exhibited higher-than-average levels of engulfment and low levels of hope. A significant relationship was identified between engulfment and hope levels, indicating that increased hope is associated with reduced engulfment. Findings suggest the importance of culturally sensitive nursing interventions in Türkiye aimed at reducing engulfment and enhancing hope among individuals with schizophrenia.
