Abstract

Introduction

The aim of this umbrella systematic review was to critically synthesize impact of physical exercise programs for cancer survivors with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).

Method

The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for umbrella reviews was adopted in this study. We searched the Medline, CinahL, Scopus, Sports and SciELO to identify relevant articles published from inception to April 2023. This review was reported in accordance with the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).

Results

Eight systematic reviews were included, of which five performed meta-analysis. Combined exercise training, comprising at least two of the following components: aerobic training, strength training, balance training and/or sensorimotor training, were reported more often to have an impact on CIPN.

Conclusion

The prescription of a combined physical exercise program in a person who is or has been undergoing chemotherapy can effectively prevent loss of strength, improve balance, as well as improve established CIPN symptoms, revealing positive effects on the quality of life.
