Abstract
Understanding trust in autonomous vehicles (AVs) is becoming increasingly important as these technologies advance toward widespread acceptance. While trust is recognized as a key factor in AV acceptance, research on the underlying mechanisms of trust formation remains limited. This study contributes to the literature by developing a trust model based on McKnight et al., 1998, McKnight et al., 2011 framework, specifically adapted for AVs, to examine how trust emerges and what factors influence its development. Using survey data from over 400 participants, we analyze the impact of initial trust, institution-based trust, and cognitive processes on trust in AVs. The findings indicate that, while certain aspects of institution-based trust show an influence, cognitive processes like unit grouping, reputation categorization, and illusions of control play the most significant role in trust formation. Additionally, trust in AV functionality and reliability strongly correlates with the usage intention. These insights provide practical implications for increasing AV acceptance, emphasizing the importance of transparent system communication, targeted trust-building strategies, and regulatory measures to enhance public confidence in AVs.
Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour focuses on the behavioural and psychological aspects of traffic and transport. The aim of the journal is to enhance theory development, improve the quality of empirical studies and to stimulate the application of research findings in practice. TRF provides a focus and a means of communication for the considerable amount of research activities that are now being carried out in this field. The journal provides a forum for transportation researchers, psychologists, ergonomists, engineers and policy-makers with an interest in traffic and transport psychology.
