Abstract
In this paper we construct two algebraic solutions for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, one of which is rational and the other is irrational. The rational solution is a soliton, which has been reported in the literature by other means. The irrational solution is a new rogue wave with a peak on top of a soliton. Our result provides a new insight into the theory of rogue waves.
