Landmark report forces on need to improve outcomes for reentry

Abstract

In a report from the Legal Action Center and InUnity Alliance released last week, personal experiences on the patient and provider sides highlight the need to improve practical solutions for patients coming out of the criminal justice system. Treatment providers in the health care system – even substance use disorder (SUD) treatment providers – are biased against the justice-involved population, the report shows. The barrier of stigma, and other barriers, constitute significant challenges to an other barriers to reentry, the term for people entering the post-incarceration world. The report, “The Care Continuum: Evidence-Based Practices for Improving Reentry Outcomes,” focuses on New York State, where policies are thought to be more liberal than in many other states.
