Abstract
Fries’ photo-rearrangement of the thioester of para-methyl benzocarbothiol in a number of solvents is studied by means of CIDNP. It is shown that the reaction proceeds with the formation of radical pairs in the singlet state. Elementary stages of the reaction are determined.
