Due to limited bioavailability of curcumin, it remains almost unknown whether acutely treated curcumin influences cognitive function and underlying neural activity. To address this question, we monitored behavior and neural activity in the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex of mice treated with vehicle or curcumin while they were engaged in a novel object recognition task. Object recognition memory performance in the novel object recognition task was increased in curcumin-treated mice. Moreover, delta oscillations in the hippocampus were enhanced in the curcumin-administered mice in the test trial. Curcumin mitigates memory deficits or improves memory when it is chronically administered to animals.
