Abstract
Eugene Garfield (1925 − 2017) was an iconic pioneer of information science. On his centennial, we remember his seminal innovations in information technology and bibliographic products, among them, Current Contents and the Science Citation Index. His impact has extended to ranking scientists, journals, and institutions. He had an exceptionally creative mind and the ability of turning his ideas into actions. His methods of evaluating scientific performance and achievements by numbers have earned praise and curse alike but it was outside his responsibility how the science community, promotions boards, and funding agencies have utilized his innovations.
