Abstract

Diabetes is one of the most common conditions that nurse practitioners (NPs) will encounter in practice. Three top-tier nursing schools separately initiated diabetes programs to enhance NP training. These 3 programs (Duke University, Yale University, and the University of California San Francisco) have unique features and innovations. One program will share outcome data suggesting that graduates reported increased confidence, leadership, and improved practice. As the societal demand grows for advance practice nurses with specialty expertise, schools of nursing may consider enhancing programs with specialty content to meet societal needs. This report provides an exemplar using diabetes programs that could be expanded to other specialties.
