Abstract

The digital transformation opens new ways for disseminating historical costumes using 3D web-based presentations. This article presents a framework for processing models of costumes which includes a system of parameters reflecting complexity of polygonal meshes and textures, statistically supported target values of those and equations for evaluating the level of detail in terms of web-based presentations. The study analysed 1210 models published online to establish indicators of the level of detail and determine the most common target values by using probability distribution fitting and the desirability function approach. By using examples of two models the target levels of detail were validated against capabilities of web-based presentations provided by the involved technologies and end users’ devices. The results allow modellers to control the level of detail for publishing their works on online platforms and foster further development of virtual museums to provide a wider audience with access to 3D models.
