Abstract

Recent experiments indicate that the spin state of molecules adjacent to ferroelectric layers depends on the magnitude and direction of the polarization. Since similar effects could arise in nanocomposites, we synthesized samples with spin crossover particles embedded in a ferroelectric polymer. The spin transition phenomenon in the poled and non-poled composites was investigated by hot-stage optical microscopy and calorimetry, but no sizeable effect of the poling on the spin-state equilibrium was detected. On the other hand, subtle matrix effects on the spin crossover properties and a rather unusual sensitivity of the spin transition on thermal annealing was detected.

Chemical Physics Letters has an open access mirror journal, Chemical Physics Letters: X, sharing the same aims and scope, editorial team, submission system and rigorous peer review. Chemical Physics Letters publishes brief reports on molecules, interfaces, condensed phases, nanomaterials and nanostructures, polymers, biomolecular systems, and energy conversion and storage. Criteria for publication are quality, urgency and impact. Further, experimental results reported in the journal have direct relevance for theory, and theoretical developments or non-routine computations relate directly to experiment. Manuscripts must satisfy these criteria and should not be minor extensions of previous work.
