Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is the mainstay of treatment to remove macrometastases into the peritoneum, but residual micrometastases are often left behind. Systemic chemotherapy remains a cornerstone of treatment for micrometastases, but intraperitoneal therapy offers advantages including higher local dose concentration with fewer systemic side effects from treatment.</p><p><strong>Areas covered: </strong>This review covers advancements in the routes and types of pharmacotherapies for PM in CRC.</p><p><strong>Expert opinion: </strong>More evidence is needed to justify HIPEC with CRS as the standard of care treatment modality for patients with resectable PM in CRC.
