Abstract

Purpose of review: Osteoarthritis (OA), a highly prevalent degenerative joint disease, is of increasing concern due to its debilitating nature and negative impact on quality of life. Recent investigations have explored the therapeutic potential of probiotics to alleviate OA. This review summarizes the emerging evidence for the potential role of probiotics in managing OA symptoms and disease progression. The link between gut dysbiosis and chronic inflammation, a key player in OA progression is discussed in this review.

Recent findings: Probiotics may modulate gut microbiota composition, potentially reducing systemic inflammation and alleviating OA symptoms, including joint pain and function. Possible mechanisms through which probiotics may exert these effects, including dampening inflammatory pathways and enhancing intestinal barrier integrity have been highlighted. Promising results from preclinical and clinical studies investigating the specific beneficial effects of specific probiotic strain(s) for OA management have been highlighted. Finally, limitations in current research and future directions, emphasizing the need for well-designed, large-scale clinical trials to definitively establish the therapeutic potential of probiotics in OA treatment have been discussed.

This journal aims to review the most important, recently published research in the field of rheumatology. By providing clear, insightful, balanced contributions by international experts, the journal intends to serve all those involved in the care and prevention of rheumatologic conditions. We accomplish this aim by appointing international authorities to serve as Section Editors in key subject areas such as the many forms of arthritis, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Section Editors, in turn, select topics for which leading experts contribute comprehensive review articles that emphasize new developments and recently published papers of major importance, highlighted by annotated reference lists. An international Editorial Board reviews the annual table of contents, suggests articles of special interest to their country/region, and ensures that topics are current and include emerging research. Commentaries from well-known figures in the field are also occasionally provided.
