Abstract

Purpose:

Target motion monitoring plays a significant role in several computer-assisted interventions. However, ensuring the reliability of tracking algorithms can be challenging without adequate tools. We introduce SlicerCineTrack, a free open-source research toolkit, designed to provide users with a user-friendly interface for visualizing their target tracking results.

Methods:

SlicerCineTrack was developed as an extension to 3D Slicer. It enables users to visualize target tracking results by sequentially playing back cine medical images, and simultaneously overlaying the target segmentation at the locations indicated by the tracking results. The extension was evaluated by established experts in computer-assisted interventions and image-guided therapy.

Results:

SlicerCineTrack is available for download from the 3D Slicer extension catalog for stable releases, and its GitHub repository for preview releases. Evaluation results demonstrate SlicerCineTrack’s effectiveness in discriminating between different tracking performances. Moreover, the experts found the extension convenient to use due to its intuitive and user-friendly interface.

Conclusions:

SlicerCineTrack was found to be effective at verifying the reliability of tracking algorithms. In turn, SlicerCineTrack shows potential for target tracking verification, as well as algorithm validation and refining through parameter tuning.

To encourage the development of formal computing methods, and their application in biomedical research and medical practice, by illustration of fundamental principles in biomedical informatics research; to stimulate basic research into application software design; to report the state of research of biomedical information processing projects; to report new computer methodologies applied in biomedical areas; the eventual distribution of demonstrable software to avoid duplication of effort; to provide a forum for discussion and improvement of existing software; to optimize contact between national organizations and regional user groups by promoting an international exchange of information on formal methods, standards and software in biomedicine. Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine covers computing methodology and software systems derived from computing science for implementation in all aspects of biomedical research and medical practice. It is designed to serve: biochemists; biologists; geneticists; immunologists; neuroscientists; pharmacologists; toxicologists; clinicians; epidemiologists; psychiatrists; psychologists; cardiologists; chemists; (radio)physicists; computer scientists; programmers and systems analysts; biomedical, clinical, electrical and other engineers; teachers of medical informatics and users of educational software.
