Abstract

A 65-year-old female patient presented with a diagnosis of PET (patulous Eustachian tube). For years, she had been suffering from severely disabling autophonia and had already undergone various unsuccessful treatments. Surgery was discussed as the last resort.

The osteopathic treatments I carried out primarily only led to a short-lasting improvement in the symptoms. An unconscious permanent tension of the cervical muscles, shoulder – and temporomandibular joint muscles – subjectively unperceived by the patient – in combination with a coordination disorder of the orofacial muscles prevented a lasting healing success. In addition to the osteopathic treatment an intensive perception training and daily coordination excercises were necessary for a successful treatment.
