Abstract

A “Cradle of Marine Science” in China, Xiamen University has a long, long relationship with the ocean. Beginning with the founding of the university in 1921 and the creation of the first Department of Oceanography in China in 1946, many generations of ocean scientists and ocean stewards were born here. Throughout our marine science journey, we have sought collaborations locally, regionally, and internationally as we seek to understand an ocean undergoing rapid change under ever increasing anthropogenic stressors. Thus, it is more important than ever that we, as a scientific community, strengthen existing ties and establish new ones to meet the coming challenges.

The 2025 Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences (or XMAS for short) provides one such platform for creating these connections. To be held from 14 to 17 January 2025 in Xiamen (Figs. 1-3), this biennial meeting hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science will continue to build upon the topics and feedback from previous iterations. Sessions will cover a diverse range of ocean science topics (physical, chemical, and biological oceanography as well as marine pollution), and workshops and salons for education/outreach, Women in Science, research adjacent careers, and early career scientists will be on offer as well. While 2025 marks the 7th XMAS, this one will be unique in that we are co-sponsored by ASLO, our first time collaborating with an international society. We hope to make this our most successful conference to date and encourage further collaborations across our one ocean.

In addition to the ocean science and networking opportunities, Xiamen offers a wide variety of sights and experiences. There's truly something for everyone. Gulangyu (鼓浪屿), with its distinctive blend of European and Chinese elements, is just a stone's throw away from Xiamen and offers many local delights. Or go slightly further afield and visit the Tulou (土楼 literal translation: earthen building), the traditional communal domiciles of the Hakka people. And for the foodies, there are loads of different regional delicacies for you to sample!

So, join us for XMAS2025! We are currently accepting abstracts through 20 September (https://melmeeting.xmu.edu.cn/xmas/). If you have additional questions about the conference (or about Xiamen and Xiamen University in general), please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you there!
