Abstract
With 10,000 births a year, Mayotte’s hospital is France’s largest maternity hospital. Of the women who give birth here, 70% are of foreign origin. In this context, many children are born into maternal exile. Pregnancy, childbirth and the weaving of the first bonds are caught up in a potentially traumatic process, to which newborn babies bear witness. The baby’s presence invites the mother to tell her story, and to bear witness to the traumatic history that stands in the way. He invites her to tell the story of this journey, in which she must find a place for herself.
