Abstract
This article discusses how Black babassu nut breakers have constructed community struggles and created political strategies in Maranhão, Brazil. From the reflections of Maria do Rosário, an important Black leader in the quilombola territory of Sesmaria do Jardim, we construct visions of her territorial ties, memory, and organizational processes, focusing on collective engagements and relations between Black women and men. These reflections are the product of fieldwork with the nut breakers and are rooted in discussions about racial terror, anti-Black violence, and collective engagement.
