Additionally, we will review the effects of lifestyle interventions commonly used for MASLD (i.e. Mediterranean diet and physical exercise) on gut microbiome, to understand if their beneficial effect can be microbially mediated. Abstract

Gut microbiota plays key functions in the human body, and its alteration is associated with several human disorders. Moreover, its manipulation is being investigated as a potential therapeutic strategy. In this narrative review we will dissect the involvement of the gut microbiota and of the gut–liver axis on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Additionally, we will review the effects of lifestyle interventions commonly used for MASLD (i.e. Mediterranean diet and physical exercise) on gut microbiome, to understand if their beneficial effect can be microbially mediated.
